Peer Support Group in Wynyard, North West Tasmania

Freedom to Yarn is a free, trauma-informed, peer-led group for women aged 16+ who have experienced family, domestic or sexual violence, as well as women who would like to support others in their community.

The group provides a safe and welcoming space for women to build connections, reduce social isolation, access information and support, and explore pathways towards healing and wellbeing.

What happens in the group?

Sessions include:

  • Peer support and connection
  • Creative and art-based activities
  • Guest speakers and information sharing
  • Opportunities to connect with local services
  • Skills and activities that support wellbeing, healing and emotional regulation

Creative activities are an important part of Freedom to Yarn. Participants can use art and creativity as a way of expressing themselves, staying grounded and taking a break when conversations or topics feel difficult.

With participants’ consent, some artwork may also be included in a community exhibition celebrating women’s strength and resilience and raising awareness of family violence in a safe and trauma-informed way.

There is no expectation to share personal experiences. Women can participate in ways that feel safe and comfortable for them.

RESPECT

We acknowledge, with deep respect the palawa people, the traditional owners of lutruwita (Tasmania/Van Diemen’s Land). The palawa people belong to the oldest continuing culture in the world. They have lived in union with Country for many thousands of years. We express gratitude for their custodianship and stand with palawa people in the declaration that sovereignty remains unceded.

We see gender inequality as both the cause and the context of family violence. Only by actively challenging gender-based oppression can we achieve positive and respectful relationships within healthy, inclusive structures and institutions. This outcome will ultimately benefit the whole Tasmanian community.
